Commissioned by Bassam el Baroni for a performance at Manifesta 8 in Murcia, Spain.
I travel with one foot bare and my money swinging
In a sock. Squint through cracks for what I need, though I don’t know what
I eat too much. In private I whisper:
“People are no longer what I think when I think People. Life is no longer what I think when I think of life.”
“My judgement is awry. I can no longer tell catastrophe from achievement or exhaustion from plenty.”
I bide my time. Sometimes an unknown tune goes very
Near me and I feel something
– oh! – something dear I cannot name.
I say, “Show me the intangible quick. What makes a person feel alive.”
I don’t know who I’m speaking to. Recently they made me clean off
words I wrote, tired, upon a wall.
